About Us

Great Instructors

 Phil Moore is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Rodrigo Medeiros, one of Carlson Gracie’s top students. Training since 1997, Phil has spent over two decades mastering and teaching Jiu-Jitsu. As head coach of the Point Loma High School varsity wrestling team, he led his athletes to multiple victories through a blend of technical skill and competitive experience.


In 2006, he founded Ocean Beach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—the first academy in Ocean Beach—earning recognition for his dedication, proven results, and genuine passion for the art. Receiving his black belt in 2013 from Rodrigo Medeiros marked a milestone in his lifelong commitment to Jiu-Jitsu.


Today, Phil continues to foster a supportive environment where students of all levels can train, grow, and challenge themselves both on and off the mat.

    Find a Class That Meets Your Need

    Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals

    Our Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals class is the foundation — think of it as Jiu-Jitsu 101. In this class, you’ll learn how to move your body efficiently, create space when someone is on top of you, and close the distance when you’re working to control your opponent.

    Jiu-Jitsu becomes simple once it’s broken down into a few key positions, or what we call categories. For example:

    • Guard:     You’re on your back with your legs wrapped around your opponent.
    • Mount:     You’re on top, controlling your opponent.
    • Side      Control: On top, chest-to-chest.
    • Back      Control (Hooks In): You’re behind your opponent with your legs around      them.

    These are the staple positions that every Jiu-Jitsu practitioner builds upon. This class gives you the tools and understanding to navigate them with confidence and purpose.

    No experience necessary. All fitness levels welcome.

    Jiu-Jitsu Basics

    Our Jiu-Jitsu Basics class is perfect for anyone new to   Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or looking to strengthen their foundational skills. This   class focuses on the core techniques, positions, and concepts that every   practitioner needs to build a solid understanding of the art.

    Students will learn how to move effectively, control   distance, escape from common positions, and apply fundamental submissions and   transitions. Key positions such as guard, mount, side control, and back   control are introduced in a structured, easy-to-follow way.

    With clear instruction and a focus on proper technique,   this class helps students develop confidence, coordination, and a strong   foundation for future training.

    Ideal for beginners — no experience necessary.

    Jiu-Jitsu - The Little Ones (Ages 3-5)

    Our Little Ones class introduces young children to the fun and fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, playful environment. Kids learn how to move on the mat with basic skills like forward rolls, backward rolls, cartwheels, and hip escapes — all while developing balance, coordination, and confidence.

    We teach the staple Jiu-Jitsu positions (such as guard, mount, and side control) without submissions, focusing instead on body awareness, teamwork, and discipline through engaging drills and games.

    A fun and positive start to the world of Jiu-Jitsu! 

    Kids Jiu-Jitsu (Ages 6-9)

    Our Jiu-Jitsu class for kids ages 6 to 9 focuses on building strong fundamentals in a fun, structured, and supportive setting. Students learn key movements, positions, and techniques — such as guard, mount, and side control — while developing balance, coordination, focus, and discipline.

    Each class blends skill-building drills with teamwork exercises and light, controlled sparring to help kids apply what they learn in a safe and encouraging environment.

    This class helps young students gain confidence, respect, and a love for Jiu-Jitsu — one roll at a time! 

    Kids Jiu-Jitsu (Ages 10+)

    Our Jiu-Jitsu class for kids ages 10 and up focuses on developing strong fundamentals while introducing more advanced techniques in a safe and structured environment. Students learn essential positions, submissions, escapes, and strategies, building both skill and confidence on the mat.

    Classes combine technique instruction, drills, and controlled sparring, helping students improve coordination, focus, and problem-solving while fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.

    Perfect for kids ready to take their Jiu-Jitsu to the next level while having fun and staying active! 

    Adult Jiu-Jitsu

    Our Adult Jiu-Jitsu class offers something new every day — so the best way to improve is to show up often! Training sessions include a mix of fundamental techniques, competition preparation, and both basic and advanced movements designed to sharpen your skills and expand your toolkit.

    Whether you’re looking to build a strong foundation, challenge yourself in competition, or just stay active and learn something new, this class will help you grow in every area of your Jiu-Jitsu journey.

    All levels welcome — consistency is key! 

    Adult 10 Round Tuesday

    10 Round Tuesday is an open mat–style training session designed to push your limits and sharpen your game. The goal is simple — get as many rounds in as possible!

    Each roll is a timed sparring session, giving students the chance to test their techniques, build endurance, and gain valuable live-training experience. The atmosphere is high-energy and supportive, with teammates encouraging each other to keep moving, learning, and improving every round.

    Come ready to train hard, challenge yourself, and level up your Jiu-Jitsu! 

    Women's Only Jiu-Jitsu

    Our Women’s Only Jiu-Jitsu class is exactly that — women training with women, led by a female instructor in a supportive and empowering environment.

    This class focuses on practical self-defense — how to prevent, escape, and defend against common attacks — while learning one of the most effective martial arts in the world. You’ll build confidence, strength, and skill in a fun, comfortable space… and yes, without any stinky training partners!

    No experience needed. All women welcome.

    Kids Competition

    Our Kids Competition Class is designed to prepare young students for success in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. Classes focus on learning competition rules, developing smart strategies, and understanding how to win more matches through technique and timing.

    Each session includes drilling, situational training, and open mat time where students can share positions, practice with teammates, and build confidence together. It’s also a great opportunity for team bonding and fostering a strong sense of sportsmanship.

    Perfect for kids interested in testing their skills and growing as competitors.

    Jiu-Jitsu Open Mat

    Open Mat is an unstructured training time where students can practice techniques, roll, and refine their skills at their own pace. It’s a great opportunity to review what you’ve learned in class, experiment with new positions, and get extra mat time with teammates.

    All skill levels welcome. 

    Private Lessons

    Private lessons offer personalized, one-on-one instruction tailored to your specific goals, skill level, and learning pace. Whether you’re a beginner looking to build a strong foundation or an experienced student wanting to refine advanced techniques, private training provides focused attention and faster progress.

    Sessions can cover technique breakdowns, positional strategy, competition preparation, or specific areas you’d like to improve. With individualized coaching and immediate feedback, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of Jiu-Jitsu and accelerate your growth on the mat.
